The Pashmina Industry in Ladakh remains a raw material-based industry with the profits being reaped by the processing industry outside the region. Against this background, NABARD - National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, NABFOUNDATION and Looms of Ladakh Women Cooperative took up a remarkable project- 'Strengthening and Broad-basing Pashima and Wool Value Chain, Leh, Ladakh.' The project aims at bringing economic benefits to the women herders and artisans of Ladakh, by providing them with the required capacity building and skill upgradation to process finished products within the region and capture the globalmarket.
Under the project, on 30th May 2022, the foundation stone laying ceremony for the ‘work studio cum training centre’ was organized at Chushul, Leh in the presence of Dr. G R Chintala, Chairman, NABARD, and in association with Looms of Ladakh Women Cooperative.
This 1.19 crore pashmina value chain project supported by OFDD, NABARD and NABFOUNDATION will see construction of the ‘work studio cum training centre’ in association with the legendary Sonam Wangchuk and a dedicated marketing support for taking the products (developed in association with National Institute of Fashion Technology Delhi) to foreign markets. It will be implemented in Leh and Kargil districts with specific focus on Eastern and South-Eastern Ladakh.
It is truly a collaborative project that leverages the power of convergence- a mandate that guides the entirety of NABFOUNDATION's operations. A huge thank you to Chairman, NABARD, OFDD, NABARD, NABARD Regional Office, Jammu and Kashmir, and Looms of Ladakh Women Cooperative for making it possible! This will go down as one of our most special days!
